Marketing in a new way

Thank you Marc Alexander, for your notes below from your recent trip to Miami to attend the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Social Networking Summit at the Hilton Airport property last Wednesday.

Marketing in a new way

Marketing has always been a business reaching out to the masses by newspaper,TV, Radio, Billboard, etc. One way marketing. Now, people rely on the internet to search for so many things and with the advent of sites such as Tripadvisor, YELP and others, customers are reading comments from folks rather than relying on advertisements from the business. These sites, as we know, are very powerful. Their seems to be a lot of trust and credibility of these sites because it comes from the public.

Location Based Services:

Our mobile devised have GPS in them. These websites use this to market people not in New York but within a few meters or miles of a particular establishment.

Foursquare.com, Facebook Places, Goalla - similar to Foursquare,

Foodspotting - Seeing photos of food taken by others.

Crowdsourcing

People submit the information on the site rather than relying on one person to add information. Such sites are:

Maze - Traffic alerts made by people in the traffic.

Trapster - speed trap locator

Ardvark - If you ask a question on where to eat tonight, this site markets your friends and their friends to poll them. Thereby getting information from your peers rather than the general public. Pretty cool.

Mechanicalturk - When you go to this site the computer assigns you tasks to complete and then pays you via Amazon. It pays you very little but after you do a few tasks you would be able to perhaps buy a book. The tasks they ask you to do are things that computers are not good at.

The Real Time Web

Accessing up to date information.

Twitter - will be able to add photos on tweets in the near future

Oneriot - If you would like to monitor 25+- websites, this site will take information from those sites and feed it to you so you don't have to go to all of them.

Google Latest

Qik - Sharing LIVE video. Simply feed a live mobile feed to Qik and share it with other. Just download the app.

Google Reader - Combines favorite websites

Feedly

Alltop

The question is for a business is, "How to we get TO the conversation?"

Augmented Reality

Simply point your smart phone at a business and it will tell you all about it.

Layer

Googlegoggles

vertualvaca.com

These sorts of sites are work in progress. Businesses are scared of gorilla type marketing where an enemy feeds bad info and people get false information.

QR Code

Place your code on print material, etc. and the public simply points their smart phone at the QR code and it brings them to a URL address.
